Catalogue~ Classification & Categorization
In a nutshell~
Library Classification is assigning a book to its place in a ‘logical scheme’ of subject matters.
The reason for this classification is so that a book may be found [ let me say over and over again ] and
that it will be found near other similar books. [this is the important part]
Whether near the subject matter- as in Non-Fiction ~ the dinosaur books [567.9] will all be together, as will the baseball books [796.357], and the Florida history books [975.9] and so on, and so on.
Or, near an author’s own storybooks/novels they have written- as in Fiction ~ all the Andrew Clements books are side by side [FIC CLE], as are the Brian Jacques books [FIC JAC], and the Will Hobbs books [FIC HOB], the Mike Lupica books [FIC LUP], and the Rick Riordan [FIC RIO], or Tolkien books [FIC TOL], etc., etc.
See…. there is a reason for all this perfection of details!
It’s called the Dewey Decimal Classification system.
Yes, we’re still using it!
Melvil Dewey was a genius of detail and we owe him a great deal of praise for our library system.
There are, of course, little nuances to the DDC system that I will gladly teach you, but I just wanted to give you a little idea of what it’s about, and why it exists. [if you didn’t know, or weren’t sure]
It’s easy to keep track of almost 14,000 books when you follow the library rules!
